What does a Wildlife Rehabber do?
Educate
Understanding why wildlife behave the way they do and educating others is an important aspect of our job. Pest control companies prey on fears and the internet is loaded with terrible advice. We can help.
Orphan Babies
Sometimes it’s hard to know if young animals needs help. We can guide you through the process of determining this.
Injured Adults
Adult animals sometimes need help too! Falling from a tree, getting hit by a car, attacked by a cat or mauled by a dog are all very traumatic; we are here to help.
What Don’t Wildlife
Rehabbers do?
Rehabbers are not “pest control” We don’t accept kidnapped babies that have a mother such as a nest of cottontail bunnies. We share the earth with others and want everyone to learn how to coexist.
HHWR is a home based, DNR licensed, nonprofit dedicated to rescuing injured and orphaned wildlife.
We specialize in small mammals
such as Raccoons, Opossum, Squirrel, Chipmunk, Woodchucks and Cottontail. We are not permitted for Deer, Birds, Ducks or Geese. Skunk & Bats cannot be legally rehabbed in Michigan.
DNR Permit: WR-309 EIN 88-1932244

Please leave nests of bunnies exactly where you
found them. Mom comes at dawn/dusk.

I found a Baby Squirrel

I found a Fawn/Deer
Mother deer stay away from fawns as much as possible. Unless a baby is crying, pacing, laying outstretched where you can see them breathing from a distance or visibly struggling- it probably doesn’t need help. Reach out to a Rehabber BEFORE intervening. DAWG, Howell Nature Center, Short’s Fawn Rescue & Outback Wildlife Rehab can all advise on Fawns, Rehabbers are NOT allowed to help adult Deer. Please contact local Animal Control, Law Enforcement & DNR for adult Deer related issues,
Humane Eviction
There are a multitude of ways to humanely evict wildlife that do not involve traps or death and we can help! Trappers rely on fear as a powerful tool to get you to hire them to remove wildlife. This often results in orphans. While we love baby wildlife, no one can raise a baby better than their own mother. With a little patience and a few tips, we can usually evict a mom and her babies or at least ensure that no one loses their life. We believe that everything has a right to live the life they were given and encourage everyone to coexist.
